Franco was so close to Hitler and Mussolini and their ambitions that his opponents, especially from outside Spain, were saying ‘We have to stop fascism in Spain because if we don’t, next, it will be Paris being bombed. Franco's forces won the war in 1939: the first year of Franco's subsequent 35-year dictatorship. The first few years Franco instituted rigid censorship, concentration camps, widespread imprisonment and even executions. Only one political party was allowed in Franco's Spain: the Falange. ¡Viva Franco!′ (′Long live Spain! Long live Franco!′) as they lowered it into a hearse. It was then secured in a waiting helicopter, which transported it to the Mingorrubio-El Pardo municipal cemetery, where Franco was reburied alongside his wife, Carmen Polo.
